Johannes will be performing the title role in the first African production of Monteverdi’s haunting Orpheus opera.
Award-winning director and designer Jaco Bouwer (Balbesit, Rooiland, Samsa-Masjien) makes his CTO debut with the first African production of Monteverdi’s haunting Orpheus opera, the earliest operatic work which has retained a place in the international canon.
Created with collaborators Magdalene Minnaar, Ina Wichterich and Wolf Britz, Brouwer’s production traces Orpheus’ descent into darkness as he searches the underworld for his departed wife, Euridice. Kamal Khan leads the cast of young singers from CTO and the UCT Opera School, including Johannes Slabbert, through Monteverdi’s achingly beautiful score, accompanied by the baroque instrumental ensemble Camerata Tinta Barocca.
